Key Life Area: Career - Tip Sheet

1. Take personality and interest assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs test and ONET Interest Profiler.

2. Go to CareerOneStop, and perform a career search based on the results of the personality and interest assessments. You may also want to look at occupations in the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

3. Consider and prioritize the different factors you are looking for in a profession, such as salary, environment, marketability, hours, etc.

4. Look up the type of position you are interested in on a job posting site, such as Indeed.com.

5. Determine the career segments that are required for the position, such as experience, education, skills and training, and affiliations.

6. If you already meet the qualifications required for a job, go to CareerOneStop or a career counselor to work on your resume, interviewing, and networking skills, to prepare for applying for a position.

7. If you do not meet the requirements, plan out ways to improve your level of competency in each career segment, such as with education, a job to gain experience, by obtaining a certification, volunteering, or joining a trade organization.

8. If you are unsure about the type of work you want to do, but have a general idea of the type of job you may be interested in, try performing informational interviews with professionals, or observing their occupations in their work environments, to get a better idea of what is involved in that career.
